When we consort towards our constitution and the interwoven amendments remarkably; these influence our daily lives through sharing or receiving the compassion and empathy to all living beings. We have to keep hope in the power of a parliamentary democratic republic and the dynamic constitution adapting to new circumstances.

Yes, we are talking about Article 51A (G) of the Indian Constitution, and this amendment prescribes the fundamental duty to have compassion for all living creatures. The 42nd amendment (in 1976) created these provisions on compassion for living creatures in Indian law courts and set it as one of the most comprehensive set of animal protection laws in the world. It mentions the sovereign duty of the citizen to protect their surroundings, both for humans and all other living creatures, especially animals. Let us celebrate the dynamic nature, static nature, and uniqueness of the Indian Constitution.

We have celebrated Republic day every year in India since January 26, 1950, to honor the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect. The beauty of our constitution is the sovereign bond and harmony between the entire stakeholders of the republic. We framed the constitution to put every citizen, regardless of faith, caste, or creed, on an equal footing before the State.

Our power to be a sovereign, socialist, secular democratic republic and to secure all its citizens’ justice, social-economic, and political. Liberty, of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship with equality of status and opportunity; and promote among them all fraternity, assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation.

What you know about compassion in general? In a civilized society, it is the sole duty of everyone to treat each living being with care, dignity, and the essence of humanness in actions. We begin with empathy, our compassion should be an opening to the present way we treat all kinds of animals and birds.

For many of us, the notion of democracy and rights which is completely buried in our school textbooks, study notes, or is something that only happens once a year when we vote for choosing the government. There is no doubt about the fact that we human beings have certain legal rights to protect us. Do animals have rights? The concept of rights is very dynamic; its meaning changes with its use and scenario.

In the constitution, what it means to compassion? Compassion in our constitution is more powerful through the addition of certain amendments. The addition of Article 51A (G) places a sole duty on the citizens of India to safeguard, protect, and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers, wildlife, protect the rights of the animals, and have compassion for all living creatures. As interpreted in the Animal Welfare Board of India, compassion for all living creatures includes concern for their suffering and well-being aspects.

How do we see some extra potency in our life? Yes, compassion gives us that extra pinch of potency with the ability to understand someone else’s situation, the strength to influence others, and the desire to take action to improve our lives. It is the vital quality of humans that allows us to step outside of ourselves and see the fortune of others around our life. Try to open the heart of our being and place our tangible expression of love and care.

The role of compassion is critical for preserving the resources and protecting the elements in the environment. Every human co-functioning is just as if they share a very close connection between them. Remember, there could be a place for sentiments in the courtroom which need not contradict the rule of law or Constitutional values. Constitution could also be the rule of love in situations, the role of compassion and sincere affection towards the living beings are essential.

It’s now the right time to apply this to our life and reap the soul-filling rewards. Our purpose to have compassion for living creatures is the central duty of every citizen.
